J Michael Bishop shared the 1989 Nobel Prize with Harold Varmus for discovering that retroviral oncogenes such as v-src arise from cellular proto-oncogenes rather than being foreign viral genes. His work at UCSF founded the molecular understanding of cancer as a disease of host genes hijacked by mutation. He has also served as Chancellor of UCSF.
