Bert Vogelstein is one of the most influential cancer geneticists in the world, having discovered the multistep nature of colorectal cancer and characterized the role of APC, KRAS, and TP53 mutations in cancer progression. He contributed foundationally to understanding microsatellite instability in colorectal cancer and the Lynch syndrome DNA mismatch repair pathway. His laboratory also pioneered liquid biopsy technologies for cancer early detection. He has received virtually every major scientific prize including the Breakthrough Prize and is among the most highly cited scientists globally.
