Bert Bhatt studies TGF-beta/SMAD signaling in cancer — a pathway that acts as a tumor suppressor in early-stage cancers (inhibiting proliferation) but promotes invasion, metastasis, and immune evasion in advanced cancers. This duality of TGF-beta in cancer biology complicates therapeutic targeting. Research on the molecular determinants of the tumor suppressive versus pro-metastatic TGF-beta switch, and on SMAD4 loss in pancreatic and colorectal cancer, informs cancer biology and treatment strategy.
