Yvonne Barr (deceased 2016) co-discovered Epstein-Barr virus in 1964 with Anthony Epstein by establishing the first continuous cell lines from Burkitt lymphoma that harbored the novel herpesvirus. Her cell culture expertise was critical to the identification and naming of EBV. The discovery founded the field of human tumor virology.
