Barnett Rosenberg accidentally discovered cisplatin's anticancer activity in 1965 while studying bacterial growth inhibition by electric fields — noticing that platinum electrodes inhibited E. coli division. The resulting platinum compound (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum) became cisplatin — one of the most widely used anticancer drugs, transforming testicular cancer (from ~10% cure to >95%), and becoming a backbone of treatment for ovarian, lung, bladder, and head and neck cancers.
