Charles Bangham is a world authority on HTLV-1, the retrovirus that causes adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma predominantly in tropical endemic regions including Japan, the Caribbean, and sub-Saharan Africa. His research has elucidated how HTLV-1 drives clonal expansion of infected T-cells through the Tax and HBZ oncoproteins, eventually leading to malignant transformation. His quantitative virology approach has provided critical insights into why only a fraction of HTLV-1 carriers develop cancer, informing risk stratification in endemic populations.
