Avrum Spira pioneered the airway field-of-injury concept and developed bronchial and nasal gene expression classifiers that guide lung cancer diagnosis in smokers. He leads Johnson and Johnson's lung cancer interception initiative aiming at early detection and prevention. He remains on faculty at Boston University.
