Arjan Griffioen is a leading European authority on tumor vascular targeting and angiogenesis inhibition. His laboratory at Amsterdam UMC has advanced the biology of endothelial cell activation in tumors and developed novel vascular-disrupting and normalizing strategies that are progressing toward clinical application.

Characterized the activated phenotype of tumor endothelial cells—overexpressing adhesion molecules and growth factor receptors—and showed how reversing endothelial anergy enhances immune cell infiltration.

Developed and validated vascular targeting compounds in combination with immunotherapy and chemotherapy, advancing multiple candidates into early-phase clinical evaluation in Europe.
