Anna Barker was Deputy Director of NCI and championed the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) initiative — the landmark project that comprehensively characterized genomic alterations across 33 cancer types using ~10,000 tumor samples. TCGA has become one of the most important resources in cancer research, generating discoveries about cancer driver genes, mutational signatures, and molecular subtypes that underpin modern precision oncology.
