Andreas Trumpp

Andreas Trumpp is a leading authority on cancer stem cell dormancy, demonstrating that quiescent G0-phase CSCs are inherently resistant to conventional chemotherapy and radiation which preferentially kill proliferating cells, and identifying molecular switches that control CSC entry into and exit from dormancy. His research revealed that c-Myc levels serve as a rheostat controlling the balance between CSC self-renewal and quiescence. He has shown that dormant disseminated cancer stem cells can persist in distant organs for years before reactivating to form metastases. His work on hematopoietic and cancer stem cell quiescence has identified druggable targets to force dormant CSCs into cell cycle for therapeutic elimination.
