Blanche Alter has conducted the definitive epidemiological studies of cancer risk in inherited bone marrow failure syndromes through the NCI Inherited Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes cohort, quantifying the dramatically elevated risks of specific cancers in Fanconi anemia, dyskeratosis congenita, and other BMF conditions. Her genotype-phenotype correlation studies have informed risk-stratified cancer surveillance recommendations that are now standard of care. She has published the most comprehensive data on cancer incidence, age of onset, and outcomes in inherited BMF syndromes.
