James Allison discovered that CTLA-4 blockade could unleash antitumor T cell responses, leading to FDA approval of ipilimumab for melanoma in 2011 and opening the modern era of cancer immunotherapy. He shared the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Tasuku Honjo. He chairs immunology at MD Anderson.
