James Allison received the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of cancer therapy by inhibition of negative immune regulation through CTLA-4 blockade. His development of ipilimumab as the first checkpoint immunotherapy revolutionized cancer treatment across multiple tumor types. His work launched the modern era of cancer immunotherapy.
