Ajay Bhatt develops risk prediction models to identify individuals at elevated pancreatic cancer risk in the general population who may benefit from targeted surveillance. His research characterized new-onset diabetes mellitus as a paraneoplastic marker in a subset of patients with occult pancreatic cancer, proposing that new-onset diabetes with weight loss in older individuals represents an enriched screening opportunity for pancreatic cancer. He has developed and validated clinical risk models incorporating demographic, metabolic, and biomarker variables to identify the highest-risk individuals in the general population for early detection programs. His population-based risk stratification work aims to make pancreatic cancer screening feasible and cost-effective.
