Rafi Ahmed made seminal discoveries in T cell memory and exhaustion including the identification of PD-1 as a marker of exhausted CD8 T cells during chronic infection. His work laid the scientific foundation for PD-1 pathway blockade in cancer. He continues to investigate stem-like progenitor exhausted T cells that fuel response to checkpoint therapy.
