Austin Bradford Hill was a pioneer of modern clinical trial methodology and led the first modern randomized controlled trial of streptomycin for tuberculosis in 1948. With Richard Doll he established the link between smoking and lung cancer through epidemiologic studies. His Bradford Hill criteria remain foundational for causal inference in medicine. His legacy shapes all contemporary clinical oncology trials.
