Carlo Croce is a pioneer in cancer genetics who discovered the critical role of microRNAs in cancer development. His laboratory demonstrated that specific microRNAs function as oncogenes or tumor suppressors, and that microRNA dysregulation is a universal feature of human cancers. Croce's work has opened new avenues for cancer diagnosis and therapy based on non-coding RNA biology.
