Yasuhiro Ito, MD, PhD is Chief of Surgery at Kuma Hospital in Kobe, Japan, one of the world's highest-volume thyroid surgery centers. He is the architect of the active surveillance paradigm for low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC), having prospectively followed over 3,000 patients with observation instead of immediate surgery and demonstrating the safety and feasibility of this approach for carefully selected patients. His longitudinal studies have fundamentally changed global guidelines for the management of PTMC and contributed to reducing overtreatment of indolent thyroid cancers.
