Jie He

Jie He (赫捷), MD is President of the National Cancer Center (NCC) of China and Director of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) Cancer Hospital, the epicenter of China's national cancer control effort. As an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, he holds the highest scientific distinction in China. He is one of the world's foremost thoracic oncologic surgeons, with a particular focus on esophageal cancer—a malignancy in which China bears an estimated 55% of the global burden. His surgical innovations in minimally invasive esophagectomy and his work on neoadjuvant therapy for resectable esophageal cancer have directly improved outcomes for hundreds of thousands of Chinese patients. As NCC director, Dr. He has overseen the development of China's national cancer screening programs, the expansion of the national cancer registry network to cover 35% of the Chinese population (the largest population-based registry effort in the world), and the publication of annual Chinese cancer statistics that now set the global baseline for understanding cancer in Asia. He has championed integration of cancer control into China's Healthy China 2030 initiative, resulting in national targets and substantial government investment in cancer prevention, screening, and treatment capacity. Internationally, he co-chairs China's collaboration with WHO and IARC on cancer surveillance and control, contributing Chinese population data to global cancer burden estimates. His publications appear in journals including The Lancet, JAMA, and Annals of Surgery, and his leadership of the NCC makes him the single most influential individual shaping cancer outcomes for 1.4 billion people.
