👥Biography 个人简介
Eduardo Bruera, MD is F.T. McGraw Chair in the Treatment of Cancer and Professor and Chair of the Department of Palliative, Rehabilitation and Integrative Medicine at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Born in Argentina and trained across South America and Canada, Dr. Bruera is widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of modern palliative medicine as an academic discipline. He has conducted over 200 randomized clinical trials addressing the most challenging clinical problems in advanced cancer: opioid rotation, delirium, dyspnea, fatigue, cachexia, and goals-of-care communication. His work on opioid pharmacology — including rotation strategies to manage tolerance, hyperalgesia, and neurotoxicity — has become standard oncology practice globally. Dr. Bruera has championed the use of palliative care outpatient clinics embedded within cancer centers and has published foundational trials on early consultation, advance care planning conversations, and the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS), the most widely used multi-symptom assessment tool in palliative oncology. He has authored over 700 peer-reviewed publications, supervised over 200 palliative care fellows, and received honorary degrees from six universities worldwide.
🧪Research Fields 研究领域
🎓Key Contributions 主要贡献
Opioid Rotation and Titration in Cancer Pain
Established the clinical evidence base for opioid rotation as a strategy to manage opioid tolerance, neurotoxicity, and inadequate analgesia, and conducted randomized trials comparing equianalgesic dosing regimens that now underpin international cancer pain guidelines.
Edmonton Symptom Assessment System
Co-developed the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS), the most widely used validated multi-symptom assessment tool in palliative oncology, now implemented in cancer centers across more than 40 countries and integrated into electronic health records.
Advance Care Planning and Goals of Care Conversations
Led randomized trials evaluating structured advance care planning interventions and family conference protocols in advanced cancer, demonstrating improvements in patient goal concordance, reduction of aggressive end-of-life care, and caregiver bereavement outcomes.
Cancer Cachexia: Anamorelin Trials
Conducted foundational clinical trials of anamorelin (a ghrelin receptor agonist) for cancer cachexia-anorexia syndrome in NSCLC, contributing to the evidence base that led to its regulatory approval in Japan and ongoing evaluation in Western markets.
