👥Biography 个人简介
Ann D. King, MBChB, FRCR, MD is a Professor in the Department of Imaging and Interventional Radiology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and is one of the world's foremost authorities on imaging of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and other head and neck cancers. She has made transformative contributions to the MRI-based staging and radiotherapy planning of NPC, a malignancy with particularly high prevalence in Southeast Asia and southern China and strongly linked to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. Professor King's research has defined the patterns of tumor spread in NPC including skull base invasion, perineural extension, and parapharyngeal spread detectable on MRI, fundamentally improving the accuracy of T-staging and reducing geographic misses during intensity-modulated radiotherapy. She has collaborated closely with radiation oncologists at Prince of Wales Hospital to integrate advanced MRI protocols into clinical practice, and has led prospective studies correlating imaging phenotypes with EBV DNA levels and survival outcomes. She has published over 180 peer-reviewed papers and is an invited expert at UICC/AJCC NPC staging workshops.
🧪Research Fields 研究领域
🎓Key Contributions 主要贡献
MRI Staging of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma
Defined the characteristic patterns of NPC spread—including retropharyngeal nodal involvement, parapharyngeal extension, and skull base infiltration—that are visible on MRI but not CT, contributing to the revision of TNM staging criteria for NPC in AJCC 8th edition.
EBV DNA and Imaging Correlation in NPC
Conducted prospective studies correlating pre- and post-treatment EBV DNA plasma levels with MRI tumor volume, response assessment, and disease-free survival in NPC patients, validating EBV DNA as a dynamic imaging-correlated biomarker.
IMRT Planning and Geographic Miss Prevention
Developed MRI-based contouring guidelines for NPC target volumes in intensity-modulated radiotherapy, reducing geographic misses and reducing toxicity by improving delineation of tumor from critical structures including the brainstem and parotid glands.
Lymph Node Staging Criteria in Head and Neck Cancer
Led systematic studies refining the size, shape, and signal-intensity criteria for malignant cervical lymph nodes on MRI in NPC and other HNSCC, improving the accuracy of nodal staging over CT-based criteria.
