Theodore L. Phillips
MD
Professor Emeritus, Department of Radiation Oncology
👥Biography 个人简介
Theodore L. Phillips is Professor Emeritus of Radiation Oncology at the University of California, San Francisco, and one of the founding figures of stereotactic radiosurgery in North America. Over a career spanning more than four decades at UCSF, he played a pivotal role in establishing Gamma Knife radiosurgery as a clinical discipline, conducting foundational clinical and radiobiological studies that validated the safety and efficacy of single-fraction high-dose irradiation to intracranial targets. He collaborated extensively with Lars Leksell's group in Stockholm and was among the first American investigators to document the biological mechanisms underlying the precise tumor cell kill achieved with stereotactic techniques. Phillips made seminal contributions to the understanding of normal tissue radiation biology, particularly the dose-response relationships in lung, liver, kidney, and spinal cord. His work on radiation pneumonitis and hepatic radiotoxicity provided the experimental framework for modern organ-at-risk dose constraints used in stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) and intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) planning. He also pioneered research into radiation sensitizers, including halogenated pyrimidines and hypoxic cell sensitizers such as misonidazole, conducting early-phase clinical trials that informed the rational design of combined chemoradiation regimens. Phillips served as Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at UCSF for many years and trained a generation of academic radiation oncologists who now lead programs across the United States. He was a founding member of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) and contributed to numerous cooperative group protocols for brain tumors, lung cancer, and gastrointestinal malignancies. His lifetime contributions to the field earned him the ASTRO Gold Medal and honorary membership in numerous international radiation oncology societies.
🧪Research Fields 研究领域
🎓Key Contributions 主要贡献
Stereotactic Radiosurgery Pioneering
Established Gamma Knife radiosurgery at UCSF and conducted foundational clinical studies demonstrating its safety and efficacy for brain metastases, arteriovenous malformations, and benign intracranial tumors, helping define modern radiosurgery practice.
Normal Tissue Radiation Biology
Defined dose-volume tolerance thresholds for lung, liver, kidney, and spinal cord through systematic experimental and clinical studies, producing the evidence base that underpins current organ-at-risk constraints in radiotherapy planning.
Radiation Sensitizer Development
Led early clinical trials of hypoxic cell sensitizers (misonidazole, etanidazole) and halogenated pyrimidines, establishing mechanistic and clinical frameworks for combining radiosensitizing agents with external-beam radiotherapy.
Cooperative Group Trial Leadership
As a founding RTOG investigator, co-designed and led pivotal trials in brain tumors and lung cancer that established standard-of-care radiotherapy regimens still referenced in contemporary guidelines.

International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics (1991)
Landmark compilation and analysis of organ tolerance doses, forming the basis of the widely cited Emami et al. normal tissue complication probability estimates used globally in treatment planning.
Hypoxic cell sensitizers in radiobiology and radiotherapy
Radiation Research (1980)
Seminal review of the mechanistic basis and clinical potential of nitroimidazole hypoxic sensitizers, guiding a generation of combined modality trials.
