Hiroyuki Mano is the discoverer of the EML4-ALK fusion gene in non-small cell lung cancer, one of the most consequential cancer biomarker discoveries of the 21st century. This finding directly enabled development of crizotinib and subsequent ALK inhibitors that transformed outcomes for ALK-positive lung cancer patients, establishing EML4-ALK as a paradigmatic oncogenic driver fusion biomarker. Mano leads the National Cancer Center Research Institute in Japan and continues to discover novel oncogenic fusion genes through comprehensive transcriptome sequencing programs, expanding the repertoire of targetable biomarkers across tumor types.
