👥Biography 个人简介

J. Michael Bishop shared the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Harold Varmus for the discovery that oncogenes originate from normal cellular proto-oncogenes. Working at UCSF, Bishop and Varmus showed that the cancer-causing src gene of Rous sarcoma virus has a normal cellular counterpart present in healthy organisms across species — the c-src proto-oncogene. This discovery established that cancer arises from mutations in our own genes rather than exclusively from foreign viral elements, revolutionizing the conceptual and molecular basis of cancer biology. Bishop also served as Chancellor of UCSF from 1998 to 2009.

🎓Key Contributions 主要贡献

Cellular Origin of Oncogenes

Co-discovered that the v-src oncogene of Rous sarcoma virus has a normal cellular homologue (c-src), proving cancer genes are corrupted versions of host genes.

Src Tyrosine Kinase Biology

Contributed foundational knowledge of the Src family of non-receptor tyrosine kinases, now established drug targets across multiple cancers.

UCSF Scientific Leadership

As Chancellor of UCSF, built the Mission Bay research campus and expanded translational cancer research programs that continue to drive therapeutic development.
