Harold E. Varmus
哈罗德·瓦慕斯

👥Biography 个人简介
Harold Varmus shared the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with J. Michael Bishop for the discovery that oncogenes — the cancer-causing genes of retroviruses — are derived from normal cellular genes (proto-oncogenes). This paradigm-shifting finding demonstrated that cancer originates from corruption of the body's own genetic program. Varmus later served as Director of the NIH (1993–1999) and Director of the National Cancer Institute (2010–2015), shaping science funding priorities globally. His laboratory continues to investigate KRAS-driven lung adenocarcinoma.
🧪Research Fields 研究领域
🎓Key Contributions 主要贡献
Proto-Oncogene Discovery
Demonstrated with Bishop that viral oncogenes (v-src) are derived from normal cellular genes conserved across evolution, establishing proto-oncogenes as the cellular precursors of cancer-causing oncogenes.
Retroviral Integration and Oncogenesis
Elucidated the mechanism by which retroviruses integrate into and activate host proto-oncogenes, explaining how viral infection can cause cancer.
NIH and NCI Leadership
As NIH Director and later NCI Director, championed basic research funding, translational science integration, and global health cancer initiatives.
Representative Works 代表性著作
Molecular Cloning of Possible Transforming Gene of an Avian Sarcoma Virus
Journal of Virology (1976)
Key early paper in the program leading to the Nobel Prize, isolating the src oncogene from Rous sarcoma virus.
The Molecular Genetics of Cancer
Science (1984)
Comprehensive review of retroviral and cellular oncogene biology that defined the molecular foundation of cancer genetics.
