👥Biography 个人简介
Axel Ullrich is a molecular biologist who performed the pioneering cloning of EGFR and HER2 (ErbB-2) receptor tyrosine kinases, providing the molecular tools that enabled all subsequent targeted therapy development against these receptors. His cloning of EGFR at Genentech in 1984 established the sequence basis for EGFR inhibitor development, and his cloning of HER2/neu demonstrated sequence homology with EGFR and established the ErbB receptor family. Ullrich also cloned the insulin receptor kinase, establishing the structural basis for receptor tyrosine kinase signaling. His foundational molecular biology work made the entire field of receptor tyrosine kinase targeted oncology possible.
🧪Research Fields 研究领域
🎓Key Contributions 主要贡献
EGFR Molecular Cloning
Performed the first complete molecular cloning of the EGFR gene at Genentech in 1984, establishing the sequence and domain structure that enabled rational design of EGFR-targeting antibodies and small molecule inhibitors.
HER2 Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Cloning
Cloned HER2/ErbB-2 and established its sequence homology with EGFR, defining the ErbB receptor family and providing the molecular basis for development of trastuzumab and subsequent HER2-targeted agents.
