👥Biography 个人简介

Ernst Lengyel, MD, PhD is the Arthur L. and Lee G. Herbst Professor and Chief of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Chicago, renowned for his groundbreaking research into the biology of ovarian cancer metastasis and the role of the omental tumor microenvironment in peritoneal dissemination. His laboratory has made seminal discoveries demonstrating that adipocytes in the omentum provide lipid nutrients to ovarian cancer cells that fuel metastatic colonization, a discovery that has opened new therapeutic avenues targeting cancer cell metabolism. Dr. Lengyel's translational program bridges fundamental discoveries in tumor biology with novel biomarker and drug target identification.

🎓Key Contributions 主要贡献

Omental Adipocyte-Cancer Cell Crosstalk

Discovered that omental adipocytes transfer lipids to ovarian cancer cells through a lipolysis-driven mechanism, providing metabolic fuel for metastatic colonization of the peritoneum—a landmark discovery published in Nature Medicine that opened new therapeutic avenues in ovarian cancer metabolism.

Peritoneal Metastasis Mechanisms

Characterized the molecular mechanisms by which ovarian cancer cells attach to, invade, and colonize the omental and peritoneal mesothelial surface, identifying matrix metalloproteinase activity and mesothelial cell retraction as critical steps in early metastasis.

Early Detection Biomarker Discovery

Leads programs to identify protein and metabolomic biomarkers in blood and peritoneal fluid that can detect ovarian cancer at earlier, more curable stages, with a focus on multi-analyte panels outperforming CA-125 alone.
