Caetano Reis e Sousa is a world authority on type 1 conventional dendritic cells (cDC1) and cross-presentation. His group at the Francis Crick Institute has defined how cDC1s sense dying tumor cells through C-type lectin receptors and toll-like receptors, initiating CD8+ T cell anti-tumor immunity. He identified DNGR-1 (CLEC9A) as a key receptor for dead-cell sensing, fundamentally advancing cancer vaccine design.
