Almut Schulze is a leading researcher in cancer lipid metabolism who has characterized how oncogenes including MYC and RAS promote de novo lipogenesis to fuel membrane biogenesis and signaling in rapidly dividing cancer cells. Her laboratory has defined the transcriptional networks driving fatty acid synthesis upregulation in cancer and identified FASN (fatty acid synthase) as a therapeutic target whose inhibition starves cancer cells of membrane precursors. Schulze has also investigated how lipid metabolism connects to redox homeostasis and ferroptosis vulnerability in cancer, identifying metabolic synthetic lethal relationships.
